Project Director (CAPEX Large Scale)

Lonza in Visp is looking for a Project Director (CAPEX Large-Scale). This position is assigned to a specific growth investment project and is responsible for leading, planning, managing, executing & delivering the ca 500+ Mio CAPEX element of Project Orca, focusing on the process design & fit-out of the new facility including utility/infrastructure elements. Location is Visp, Switzerland. The Project Director (Capex large-scale) will lead and manage a matrixed team of professionals including large numbers of external vendors and partners to ensure the on-time, within-budget successful execution & delivery of the project throughout all of the full life cycle from Concept through to OQ completion and into process validation.  The Project director (capex large-scale) will report to the Network Lead Biologics Large-Scale

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsible for delivery of project goals in terms of cost, time, risk, and functionality according to client expectations over the entire life-cycle of the project (from concept design through to final licensed facility). Lead, drive and manage the full project team members and partners aligned to a common set of goals, within a collaborative partnership model

  • Establish project charter including scope of work, goals and deliverables together with the relevant project champion to support business objectives in collaboration with senior management and many stakeholders. The project director (capex large-scale) delivers to the End User Operations, who then deliver the output to our Business Unit and thus our customers.

  • Ensuring compliance with all pertinent safety policies, rules and regulations, cGMP regulatory guidelines and licensed facility within the pharma / biotech industry

  • Establish project charter including scope of work, goals and deliverables together with the relevant project champion to support business objectives in collaboration with senior management and many stakeholders. The project director (capex large-scale) delivers to the End User Operations, who then deliver the output to our Business Unit and thus our customers.

  • Creating, executing and updating project work plans as appropriate to meet the changing needs and requirements. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders, partners, vendors & suppliers to establish appropriate planning, scheduling, earned value reporting, monthly reporting & escalation.

  • Reporting regularly in writing, including project progress reports. This reporting will include presenting and defending project progress up to the highest levels within Lonza Commercial Business Units, Senior Operational management and potentially even Executive committee members. Includes both internal to Lonza stakeholders as well as ensuring external partners if needed are informed/aligned.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of quality systems and cGMP compliance for the business by ensuring that all project CAPEX leads and teams comply with processes, procedures and instructions for all activities in which the team participates.

Key requirements:

  • Master degree or PhD (process, pharmaceutical, biochemical engineering or equivalent) or long time and in-depth project management or operational experience in multiple international environments.

  • Extensive experience in project CAPEX engineering and project management for Bio-Tech, pharmaceutical industries with in-depth experience in facility layout and optimization or equivalent.  Important to have vast experience and expertise in the field of site/facility/process and utility functionality, setup and layout, knowledge of current technology in the field of building, building technology, DS and DP processes, automation and utility technologies. Strong understanding of large scale mammalian and perfusion technologies desirable.

  • Project experience needs to be in a high-growth/fast-track type of environment where ability to deal with constant change of scope/ambiguity is present.

  • Track record on project organization, controls of cost & schedule, risk management, forecasting, issue identification & resolution, escalation & forensic analysis experience.

  • Track record of demonstrated ability to develop new ways of working in project management in partnership/collaboration with strategic partners (e.g. EPCMV)

  • International experience is strongly preferred, with DACH region exposure desirable.

  • Experienced in cGMP pharma / biotech industry essential as well as good understanding of how the CDMO pharma / biotech industry & business works

  • Excellent command of English; German advantageous.
